A Matrimonial proceeding can be conducted only in Supreme Court.

The areas of conflict in Divorce proceedings have been greatly reduced in the past few years because the grounds for divorce have been enlarged to include "irretrievable breakdown of the marriage for a period of six months."  In other words, anyone who is married can establish grounds for divorce by alleging that the relationship between the married parties have “broken down irretrievably” for a period of six months. A Divorce proceeding encompasses Custody, Visitation, Child Support, Spousal Support, which is now called maintenance, and the distribution of the parties' assets acquired during the marriage. It should be noted that the majority of the cases are usually settled.
